TThis U.S. Census Bureau site offers links to the the government statistical agencies for individual countries. Such sites may include the latest statistics on economic indicators and categories relevant to a particular country. Not every country has a government Web site. Lauinger Library also has statistical handbooks for selected countries. The most current ones are in Reference, with older volumes on the 4th Floor, call number ranges from HA1171 to HA4631.

Government Finance Statistics (GFS)

The Government Finance Statistics database, issued by the International Monetary Fund, contains data on revenue, expense, and transactions in assets and liabilities for the general government sector and its subsectors, such as military expenses or tax revenue. The time series present annual statistics on detailed revenues and expenditures for all levels of government. Topics covered include deficit/surplus or total financing, revenues or grants, expenditures, lending minus repayments, domestic financing, foreign financing, domestic debt or total debt, and foreign debt. Global Financial Data is a source for historical stock market, financial and economic data. The GFD Database includes over 8,500 current and historical data series covering over 200 countries that have been collected from original sources. Many of the series extend back two centuries.
Balance of Payments Statistics

Reports detailed balance of payments data for current account (goods and services), capital account, financial account (portfolio or direct investment), and reserves. This statistical database includes historical data from all series appearing in the Balance of Payments Statistics Yearbook (BOPSY) Country Tables (Part 1) and the World and Regional Tables (Part 2). The Methodologies, Compilation Practices, and Data Sources (Part 3) notes are available when selecting most country tables. The Economic Concept View provides a cross-country view of the concepts in the BOPSY by individual or groups of countries.

A well indexed, comprehensive collection of statistics in tabular format. Includes basic statistics for a wide range of economic indicators. The index leads to specific table numbers. Each table lists the source of the statistics for further reference.

Includes demographic and industrial data sets for the Decennial Censuses of 1990 and 2000, the Decennial Supplementary Survey, the American Community Survey (1996-), the Economic Census and Population Estimates. Population topics include aging, disability, education, gender, income and employment, origins and languages, poverty, race and ethnicity, relationships, transportation and veterans. Housing information includes physical and financial characteristics.
Older Census materials are often available in print or microfilm. Most Census 2000 materials do not have print equivalents. Ask for help at the Reference Desk.

Formerly World Debt Tables, this resource presents statistics on public and publicly guaranteed debt of 138 countries and regional and income groups. Contains many types of data from the World Bank Debtor Reporting System, including total external debt stocks and flows, key debt ratios, major economic aggregates, average terms of new commitments (private and public), currency composition of long-term debt, debt restructing, workers’ remittances, and net inward foreign direct investment (FDI). Data may be displayed as tables, charts or maps or exported as Excel or ASCII files. Results can be scaled, indexed against a particular year, or viewed as percentage change. Annual compilation of trade statistics from over 130 countries, detailed by commodity and partner country. The data are processed into a standard format with consistent coding and valuation. All values are converted into U.S. dollars using exchange rates supplied by the countries, or derived from monthly market rates and volume of trade. For many countries data coverage starts as far back as 1962 and goes up to the most recent completed year.

Data can be retrieved by commodity or trading partner. The database also features statistics on exports broken down by state. Offers detail only to the two-digit Harmonized Code level.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
The ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful desktop mapping software program for managing information and data of any kind based on location. This decision-making tool allows users to visualize information and data in new ways to reveal relationships, patterns and trends, and to create customized maps based on that analysis. Users can supply their own data, make use of datasets available in the Gelardin New Media Center, or utilize data that accompany the ArcView software. Gelardin has two work stations with ArcView GIS software installed and a color printer for printing maps. ArcView GIS software may also be borrowed from the Government Documents Department for installation on any Georgetown University-owned computer. For more information contact Timothy Cash at 687-2705.
