Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne

Since the monumental "Dictionnaire de biographie française" remains incomplete (in 2008, it had reached 'Lefevre' in vol. XX: 3), this work remains a primary source of reference for individuals born well before 1865, and with surnames beginning L-Z. Even the earlier volumes (A-L) may afford useful information to supplement the entries in DNF.

Dictionnaire de l’Académie française

The ninth edition of this magnum opus by the Académie française. The editors have prefaced their work with these words of wisdom:

ARTFL

French-language literary, religious, philosophical, political, and scientific works from the 13th through the 20th centuries. Originally created in 1957 as the database behind Trésor de la Langue Française, a French-language dictionary, this database drew from a broad range of written French, from novels and poetry to biology and mathematics. Useful not only for lexicographers but also for many other types of humanists and social scientists engaged in French studies, the database was expanded in 1981 by a cooperative project of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the University of Chicago. This joint project is called American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (ARTFL). The database consists of nearly 2000 texts written between the 13th and 20th centuries, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. ARTFL also includes a Provençal database. Genres include novels, verse, theater, journalism, essays, correspondence, and treatises. Standard scholarly editions were used in converting the text into machine-readable form.
